This body of work focuses on a person’s sense of place and direction. The references are both geographical as well as autobiographical. Many of the pieces are about location. A location in the past, present or future. I have an interest in the paths lives take and the influences of surroundings. In these pieces the birds take on the role of the being in its environment. From my own experiences I have found a source for these pieces. Pieces that revolve around a persons sense of being, of relationships, parenthood, stations in life, and geography and how each of these influence and affect the other. I enjoy the challenge of personifying human issues through non-human forms. At the nucleus of each sculpture is an idea around which the piece grows. In a sense, the way a grain of sand stimulates the oyster enough that it creates a pearl.
